Don't be a Tool Stockpile.

Don’t be Tool Stockpile.

I know it has been a few days since my last post, I do apologize for that. My family and I have bought some land and we were doing some work on it. But it did give me an idea for an article so I am back and here you go.

Today I would like to talk about tools. Okay so what can I say about tools that you guys don’t already know, well for one thing maybe I can list a few you have not thought about. This one here will be in list form.

1. Garden Hoe.

2. Hamer.

3. Multi tool. (Gerber, Letherman.)

4. Axe. (double headed Axe. Splitting maul.)

5. Outdoors man Kit. (this kit will consist of a hatchet, Machete a range of blades to be used for wood working as well as gutting and skinning tools.)

6. pry bar

7. shovel (I usually keep the smaller style shovels in my truck but a couple of regular sized shovels are handy for at the retreat, as well as a compliment of gardening tools.)

8. Snatch blocks. (these are like pulleys except you use them to get a better grab on large items that you want to pull, like say a log, if you need a large log pulled but you can’t get the right angle on it you wrap a chain around the base of a tree then attaché a snatch block you can use that angle to move the block in the direction you want the log.)

9. Pulleys. (as stated above combined with a snatch block you will be able to move and lift what you need.)

10. small pruning shears. (if you need to make a blind these will help just make sure that you pull your braches away from where your blind will be.)

11.  firearm cleaning kit.

12. 2 way handheld radios. (if you cannot get the crystals you would need to encrypt them or bump the channels to a different frequency be careful in their use as they can be triangulated.)

13. small travel size solar panels. (great for charging the little items you might need day to day.)

This list is completely expandable based on your groups needs. Most of the tools I have listed you would use around the retreat, and other would be set aside for bug out.

Something I wish I had covered earlier but had forgot to was the use of Army Surplus phones. Getting few of these Vietnam era phones will be a great asset to you and your people. When setting up your, OP outpost you will need to be able to communicate with your look out posts as well as your Operations center so make sure you get plenty of Como wire and when setting these systems up burry the wire so that it cannot be cut. Also make sure you have plenty more because if you have to bug out this would be one thing you would want to take with you.

"I have the Power!"

“I have the POWER.”

Today I thought I would go back and cover power generation. I will start with wind power and storage , with a brief add on about solar power and ending with chicken power. This will be brief as you can find most if not all of the information online.

Harness the power of mother nature. Green energy for the health of our planet and our children, that’s what people are telling us all over the world, but for our purposes we will simplify this.

Wind power is a great way to capture freely energy that we can use in our everyday lives. Sadly the ability to use it reliably depends on mother nature.  But we will cover it today. So there are different ways of making a wind generator, you can take an electric motor and wire it so that instead of using power it provides power many times going this route can be difficult, 1. You have to have a motor that can spin easily and freely, and my opinion is that it’s too much of a pain to find the right motor. I prefer using alternators from cars, my favorite one to use is a GM single wire no load alternator. No load means that the RPMS of the Alternator does not have to be all that high to get a charge flowing from the alternator. Using a row of batteries wired in tandem will provide you with the ability to store the power  and use it as needed. When wiring the batteries you will need to make sure that you wire them to the desired voltage output. I do not know the conversion table for this, but I assume you all can just search the internet to find the right information for doing it. You will need a power inverter  and you can buy these from many different stores such as Harbor Freight, make sure you get a few extras as backups.

For your wind generator you will need to build a few towers that you can attach to your converted Alternator . It is highly advisable that you make a lever that you can use to stop the fan blades from moving this will help if you have to shut it down when you have excessive winds as well as give you the ability to make repairs.  Build an enclosure for your motor so it is not destroyed by the elements.

Solar panels are a great way to generate power and you can buy the fairly cheap at Harbor Freight, these usually come in ready to set up kits and are fairly easy to install, you will have to buy enough of them and wire them up to get the desired output you want. There are instructions in the kit that will walk you through this.

Chicken power. Here I will provide you with a link that I personally feel will be better  resource than listening to me try to explain it.  This does work as I have used this method for powering a vehicle.  heating a house as well as a generator and cooking.  You can find anything you need at the moment on the internet I suggest you take the time and search out things that I list here, you can also make bio diesel but you should know that the process is very time consuming.

Defending your castle

From here on out I will be changing the format slightly so you get more information on specific areas of Survival skills.

I think today we will discuss ways to start a survivalist group, things that every group should know as well as how to best structure the group, how to make the group self sufficient,  choosing of a survival retreat location, as well  fortifications of a Survival retreat.

Things to remember when starting a Survivalist group is that the people who join your group become extended family. You will  have to depend on one another unlike any other time in your life, these people you group  up with, will mean the difference between life and death.

Your group should take an oath to one another, to always provide assistance no matter the circumstance,  to always be vigilant as well as look out for one another.

Starting a group is a struggle, I would first mention you should get with family and friends who feel the same way you do. You can put an ad out on craigslist, but I do not think that will turn out quite the way you would want. Be careful of who you choose to join your group as we all know there are some sick people out there. Attempting to start a group is a challenge but if you succeed you will all be better off together than you would be alone.

Every group should know that you have the potential to be a target, security should always be at the forefront of any decision your group makes. Time and time again groups fall apart for one reason or another, it is vital that everyone in your group works together to keep this from happening. Trust one another and be loyal because that’s all you will have. Get a dog. I prefer Karelian Bear Dogs and the reason for this is simple, these dogs are loyal beyond belief if they perceive someone as a threat they will attack anyone meaning to do harm to their pack. A simple rule for having a dog at your retreat should be this, the dog is a member and has a job to do so don’t treat as a pet , pat it on the head every now and again but leave your dog alone to do its job. Give your canine a place of its own outside. I will post more on dog training tips at another time or I will ask one of my readers who has skills to post a training tutorial.

A good rounded group could consist of up to 20 people and vary in skills. Look for people that have skills in medicine even if it’s as simple as a nurse or a combat medic, you will need people who can provide care for sick and or wounded. Look for people who have mechanical skills these people are a great asset to have around and usually can figure out how to rig something and make it work, such as a wind generator using an alternator from a car. People who know canning is also important and can really help the group with storing of food, also it is important to learn how to brew beer, see wheat and barley are crops that don’t hold up well to storage and beer is liquid bread. Find yourself someone who is security savvy, someone preferably with a military background or Law enforcement.  Just as importantly you should seek out people with electrical skills, you just might want to keep your refrigerator running and you will need the skills of a good electrician to fall back on. Do not discount children these guys are a great resource for a group once they are trained to understand the risks involved, and children have a better time at adapting to situations and can help with chores. Learn to grow food as well as hunt.

Structuring your survival group will help to keep things in order. Choose a leader for the group pick someone who can make fast decisions in difficult situations but shows the aptitude to make correct ones, every leader needs a second in command. The second in command should also have the same ability as the elected leader, put people in charge of all the happenings at your retreat  someone will need to be able to take inventory of consumables and brief the group on the situations of stock, another for making sure that planting and gardening is done (Note: gardening can be tricky especially for women, touching the leafs of a plant when a woman is menstruating can kill the plant, this does not happen with all women.)  Set up a watch commander usually this person would be the second in command, his scope of responsibility should be scheduling watches, setting up tactical exorcises / drills, picking positions for Observation Posts (OP),  setting up and manning the Command Center (C&C). put someone in charge of  morale, keeping spirits high in bad situations can mean the difference to the physical and emotional health of your group. Put someone in charge of physical training, exorcise not  only helps keep the body healthy but it also helps with emotional health. Give everyone in your group a voice, listen to them  put things to a vote it is important that people in your group feel they have a say.

Pooling resources is a great way to increase your chances of survival in a bad time. Your group should think seriously about chipping in to buy land or groupings of land all located in the same area with property lines backing up to one another. Small 5 acre plots grouped together is helpful, but chipping in to buy one 20 acre plot is better usually you can get raw land cheaper than buying 4, 5 acre plots with homes already built on them.

The initial choice for a survival retreat should be made with security in mind, higher ground will offer the best security but could cost more in useful land as well as the cost for a well. Try to keep your property away from communities as this is an easy way to be targeted by looters and such.  Smaller towns will eventually start to form similar structure to your Survivalist group, and become an ally. Attempt to buy land this has trees for cover and concealment, fence off your land as well as put out early warning alarms in the form of cans and such.

To continue on with setting up your land I will start at the retreat building itself,  I like brick or stone buildings they are stout and offer a castle like defense, after all this will be your castle. I suggest you make black out curtains, as well as going to the scrap yard to buy enough ¾ inch thick steel plates a couple big enough to reinforce your doors, doing this will mean you will need to buy heavy duty hinges to take the weight. You can custom cut a good hardwood to disguise you’re up armored doors, doing the same thing for the windows you can make them look like shutters, I suggest if you do this that you cut a cross section out of them to make it easier to shoot from, hang them the same way you would have hung the door. Do not forget to make re-enforcement bars for the doors that to keep them from being bashed in by Looters ect. You can just put in cross bars for the windows as a way to secure them. Invest in a tin roof this will help to keep the risk of fire down from people who think they can just burn you out.

Your castle defend it, dig a moat. This will keep vehicles from being able to ram straight through. As far as the inside of your fortification goes you will want enough space to comfortably house all of the people in your group, store some of your supply’s as well as have access to get out of your fortification if the need arises.  If your group can afford to make tunnels with concrete, shipping containers, or just a simple dug tunnel. Make more than one and disguise the entrances, if you build side rooms off of the tunnels you can store more supplies in them. Make sure if you have a dirt tunnel you build it so that water washes away from your retreat as well as lay pallets down to protect anything you may store in there.

In to the Fray

Okay my friends and fellow Patriots I am going to lay something out here for you all to think about.

With today’s political climate, the condition of our Economy, and the attack from our federal government on our civil rights, I have decided that I should attempt to spread some ideas and maybe a little wisdom to my friends here.

For a while now we have all been giving each other little tips on face book to help as a just in case this happens.  It occurred to me that maybe someone should try to outline a good paper for everyone to look at and expound on the ideas. The first thing I would like to discuss with you all is a BOR (Bug Out Rig)

A BOR. Is a rig that is mechanically sound, 4X4, all mechanical. Another words it is a highly maneuverable very reliable rig. My personal preference for these rigs are International scouts they are cheap easy to work on and very capable. One thing I like about them is that the front windshield is almost 90 degrees straight up and down, the reason for this is a fly over, (plane, drone, or chopper) the window is not easily visible with light reflecting off of it. This is the same reason why our hummers have their windows at a 90 degree angle. You can still get parts for these rigs dating all the way back to 1961. These trucks have plenty of cargo room and extra seating if needed. Make sure that whatever vehicle you buy you get one with points and condenser ignition as this is easily replaced if there is an EMP.

Another topic is groups or better yet a survivalist group. A survivalist Group is a group of people who get together in case of an emergency, you pool your resources for the betterment of the group. Remember no one man can do this on his own. I would suggest that any  group keep their numbers around 20, you must be able to trust everyone in your group. Next chip in and buy a piece of remote land, small towns and communities could be helpful but try to steer clear of populated areas as these areas are easy targets for looters ect . if you have enough resources to acquire some land make sure you fortify it. Leave room to grow a garden and raise chickens. Chickens have many uses aside from providing food, they keep the bugs down, there feces can be used as a fertilizer as well as a fuel, I will give you more on that later, but right now the focus is on survival for your group. You will need to set up watches I would suggest but this would be based on how your group feels about it but a good watch rotation is one that will make sure everyone is plenty rested and alert, as well as working party’s this should be scheduled around the watch, everyone in a group must work for the group. Elect a leader pick someone who can keep a cool head in bad situations, ultimately it is the leader or your group that will give you solidarity, make sure that you stay busy. Staying busy will help to combat depression, so exercise even if you hate it. One more note this is to the leader of your group and is only a suggestion, always get the input from your group and don’t try to handle everything yourself, put things to a vote if it helps but keep in mind ultimately it is the leaders who make the final decisions.
Now earlier I mentioned fuel, so I will now elaborate on that, chicken manure is great for making an LP gas and it is done like so. With a very large pressure cooker shovel the chicken manure in to it use a hot plate and a solar panel rated for the amps to heat the manure to 80 degrees and maintain. Attach a high pressure hose leading from the lit to a propane take (note make sure you keep this away from your group and have plenty of line leading to the tank) you can shut the flow of gas to the tank by turning the valve on the tank you can use water to see how full the tank is by pouring it over the tank. It is better if you get a sticker designed to tell you how full the tank is.

Fire arms this will be based on my personal feeling and is subject to how your group feels. My preference for calibers are as follows. 22 cal nice little round that can be used for hunting fairly quiet and cheap, buy as many rounds as you can. For a side arm I am partial to the Glock .40 cal this weapon is widely used by law enforcement in all 50 states  and in most cases you can buy these at discounted prices from surplus stores. The .40 cal is great because it has the stopping power of a .45 without the blow through. The 9mm in my opinion is a waste often times you have to take more than one shot to bring you opponent down. Now for rifles I am fond of the 308 rifle and the 30-06 both great rounds these rifles are straight shooting weapons and their range is well documented. A riot shot gun well I don’t have to explain that one. Now for the last rifle I want to talk about. The AR 15 .223 or 5.56 NATO these weapons are cheap you can pick up a bushmaster for 600 bucks these are the most common rounds used by para military police as well as every branch of the armed forces and the rounds are cheap as well as easily obtained.

You should not go looking for trouble but you should always be aware of the fact that trouble will  seek you out. Looters are a problem in any given society that fails as well as other aspects of a social collapse. I encourage everyone to read books on plants and fauna, learn how to make soap as well as toothpaste the last thing you want is a field expedient tooth extraction, tampons stock up on these they will not one help to keep mother nature corked but they also make great first responder blood stoppers, just stuff one in a wound to stop bleeding. Another thing while I am on the subject is everyone should read and learn combat first aid.

That is all for now
Kevin Gardner your friendly survivalist guru.
More to come.
